Your phone rings. Someone on the other end of the line says, "Hello, I'm from Microsoft and we've detected a problem with your computer. We think it's a virus." Sounds reasonable. After all, Microsoft is calling you. So you continue on. "We need to do a remote login to scan your computer." Well, it's Microsoft, right, what could go wrong? You let them on your computer. They do some scans and tell you you need to but antivirus software. It's going to cost you some money, but then your computer will be safe. At this point you think, well, it's Microsoft, so they know what they are talking about. $500 to $1000 later, you are off the phone with them and think you are safe now.
The only problem with this is that it wasn't Microsoft calling you. It was a scammer calling from India, Russia, or China taking your money and literally doing little or nothing to your computer. If you think this is unusual, it's not. We just had a person bring their computer in to our Service Department that this happened to. They are now out $1000 and got literally nothing for the money they spent. We see this in our shop several times a month.
Don't fall for this scam. Microsoft will never call you telling you you have a computer problem. They don't do that. No one legitimate will call you telling you that. These are some of the worst computer scams going on today. If they call you, hang up on them. If you really think you have a computer problem, or a virus or spyware problem, call us at (208)472-2800. We are right here in Boise and have been BBB A+ rated for over 30 years. Don't get taken like the person we talked to today did.
